Canberra lays a great deal of stress on those sectors which are facing a severe shortage of skilled workers. To initiate the process, more visa categories have been streamlined and new immigration policies have been formed. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has created several visa programmes to target approximately 190,000 new permanent residents for the year 2015-16.

While from China it will be 23.7%, from India it will be only 21.2%. It will be rather interesting to see mix number of movement from Europe and Asia.

To attract immigrants, the DIBP has already made the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) public for the year 2016-17. The list is introduced keeping in mind the specific needs of the labor market and to attract immigrants from almost every part of the world.

The country has a point based system, and under the prevailing occupation list, it plans to welcome immigrants under the 194 occupational categories. Thus, for the time being the applications for the said professions have been closed till further announcement is made. Further, some more occupations are now closed.
